AS THE YEAR FADES

I believe as the year fades so also does the memory of the reunion go with it. I am so disappointed with the response to the website that a golden opportunity of communicating was lost. Surely there are contributors from over 50 years of education. Remember we were called scholars in our day. Has that too gone? Compliments to James McNerney who recently lost his great sister Anna r.i.p on his article in Longford History collection on the Moyne way. It too will be uploaded. Keep the Faith.

legion of mary and moyne

It is noteworthy to mention that the latin school was in existence when Frank Duff started the Legion in 1921. He had been in contact with Bishop McNamee before Canon Masterson started a Praesidia in 1932 at Mohill where it spread to Carrrick on shannon Co Leitrim where it has had an unbroken presence since. Here in Leitrim we celebrated last night this fact and we rembered among others Bishop Moynagh a past pupil who worked closely with edel Quinn in Arica. I remember meeting him at his home and talking to him about the legion unaware that we were past pupils of st marys apostolic school moyne. do you remember that ? I have some where my leaving cert results with that insignia printed on it.more valued than the actual results of the said questionable scholar. Alas apart from the great sean o suilleabhain I seem to be the only scribe on board.

Remember our dead.

In November we think of our parents, teachers and fellow pupils

And I wil be there beside you ,every day, week and year. And when you are sad I’m standing there to wipe away the tear.

I dreamed death came te other night and heavens gate swung wide, with kindly grace an angel fair ushered me inside. And there to my astoshiment stood folks I knew on earth, some I judged and labelled as unfit;of little worth.indignant words rose to my lips but were never set free, for every face showed stunned surpise;NO ONE EXPECTED ME.

President Kennedy came in 1963

Dan drives a Massey 65 from that year. I have just returned from viewing the visit of John Fitzgerald Kennedy as President of the U.S.A to Ireland. He acknowledged his ancestry and Irishness. I know also that many of you too would like to return, indeed you have a right to do so and walk the journey of  an earlier life. In November we remember our dead at Moyne both teachers and pupils.May they rest in Peace.

Names never forgotten

Sean when I read your names of the various classes my memory came alive of these distinctive giants of Education. Some are Priests ,Gardai and Farmers. I recall them as I started Moyne in 1965 and remember the famous eccentric pronouncement of Mattie who always said to come to Daddy!!!. He was an adult in comparison to the baby faced first years gullible and up to their eyes in elbow grease. Imagine been sent to the shop for elbow grease and not knowning  the difference. “unless you become like little children you cannot enter the kingdom” Pat Lennon went to school in a morris van and fothered cattle on the way.Micheal Kiernan is now digging for gold in California having learned his trade in the narrow drumlin fields of North Longford taking out stones and potatoes. Luke went to National School with me at Rossan and was built from the ground up.

I had to put in my User Name and Password ten times at least. It keeps saying “Incorrect Password” or “Incorrect User name”. There is something wrong with it.

memoribilia–museum of the latin school

Reading Sean’s article on the class of 1962 made me wonder if it were possible to replicate the life of the scholar other than in words. We must pursue the photo line where possible and use this medium to record it.Would you believe that it is hard enough to come across the old bike?I wonder where the roll call books are.

Moyne : The class of 1962 to 1967

Moyne
The class of 1962 to 1967

I started attending the Latin School in 1962 and there were 42 beginners. Not all of them started the first day and not all of them finished the year. The following were the 42.

First Years of 1962-1963

John Murray                             Pat Corrigan

Fintan Daly                               Gene Dowling

Gerry Masterson                      Martin McGurk

Brian McGlade                        Thomas Croghan

Peter Lee                                 Brendan Grimes

Mark Reilly                              Noel McGlade

Michael Cully                           Ciaran O’Rourke

John Lee                                  Liam McNamee

Éamon Maguire                        John F McManus

Michael Kiernan                        Pat Lennon

John A Shields                          Michael McAdden

Donal Brady                             Vincent Tierney

P J Harton                                Patsy Foy

Gerry Lyons                             Michael Morris

Oliver McNamee                    Pat Redahan

Pat Mulligan                             Seán Lynch

J J Masterson                           Gerry Reilly

Benny Cumiskey                     John F Murtagh

Leo Reynolds                           Pat Lennon

Tom Grey                                 Dessie Hughes

Dan Halton                               Seán Sullivan

Of the 42 above, my notes from the time say that Halton and Hughes only came two days. Dessie Hughes was from Coalisland, Co Tyrone and won a Minor Championship medal playing midfield with Colmcille in 1963. I cannot understand how a lad that young could be midfield on a minor team in 1963, but maybe he was older than the rest of us.

Grey stayed only a month. Gerry Reilly finished at Christmas. Reynolds and Mulligan finished before the summer exams. The following had been in first year the year before: F Daly, P Lee, Shields, Brady, Tierney, Mulligan, Lynch, G Reilly and Gray. Mark Reilly started the Christmas before.

The five teachers in First year were

Fr James Faughnan (Principle) – Maths and History

Fr Phil McGee – English – and Geography

            Fr James Bland – Irish

Fr Dan Kelly- Greek and Christian Doctrine

            Sean O’Reilly- Latin (sometimes Geography)

The first four teachers mentioned above are all now deceased

The only pupil above that I know to be deceased is Patsy Foy from Miltron, Aughavas. However there are many of them that I do not have any information on now.

Second Years of 1963 – 1964

There were 21 pupils in second year, just half of the number that had started in 1962. The following remained in First year: Murray, Corrigan, Daly, McGurk, B McGlade, Croghan, Cully, McManus, McAdden, Harton, Morris, O McNamee and J J Masterson. Michael McCabe joined us having been in second year the previous year

The second year class was as follows:

Gene Dowling                           Sean Sullivan

Pat Lennon                               Michael Kiernan

Pat Redahan                             Mark Reilly

Peter Lee                                 Noel McGlade

Brendan Grimes                       John Lee

Patsy Foy                                 Michael McCabe

John F Murtagh                        Liam McNamee

Ciaran O’Rourke                     Benny Cumiskey

Sean Lynch                              Donal Brady

Gerry Masterson                     Éamon Maguire

Gerry Lyons

Noel McGlade only stayed a month in Second year. Sean Lynch finished after Christmas. There was therefore 19 at the end of the school year.

The same five teachers operated during 1963-1964

Third Years of 1964 –1965

Brendan Grimes and Mark Reilly did not return at the start of the school year. John Dermody came from the Convent in Granard at the beginning of September. There was therefore 18 in third year as follows:

Gene Dowling                           Sean Sullivan

Pat Lennon                               Michael Kiernan

Pat Redahan                             John Dermody

Peter Lee                                 Donal Brady

John Lee                                  Gerry Lyons

Patsy Foy                                 Michael McCabe

John F Murtagh                        Liam McNamee

Ciaran O’Rourke                     Benny Cumiskey

Gerry Masterson                     Éamon Maguire

Patsy Foy left before Christmas

The same five teachers operated during 1964-1965

Fourth Years of 1965 –1966

Apart from Patsy Foy, the same group were in fourth year as in third year. There was therefore 17 in fourth year

Gene Dowling                           Sean Sullivan

Pat Lennon                               Michael Kiernan

Pat Redahan                             John Dermody

Peter Lee                                 Donal Brady

John Lee                                  Gerry Lyons

Éamon Maguire                        Michael McCabe

John F Murtagh                        Liam McNamee

Ciaran O’Rourke                     Benny Cumiskey

Gerry Masterson

For fourth year there was one new teacher. Fr Bland left to teach in St Mel’s at the start of the 1965-1966 year and he was replaced by Hugh McDonald from Nenagh, Co Tipperary.             Bhí sé ag muineadh Gaeilge.

Fifth years of 1966 – 1967

Pat Redahan went to Good Counsel, New Ross, Co Wexford at the beginning of school year. That left 16 in the class.

Gene Dowling                           Sean Sullivan

Pat Lennon                               Michael Kiernan

Gerry Masterson                      John Dermody

Peter Lee                                 Donal Brady

John Lee                                  Gerry Lyons

Éamon Maguire                        Michael McCabe

John F Murtagh                        Liam McNamee

Ciaran O’Rourke                     Benny Cumiskey

Hugh McDonald, teacher, left and he was replaced by Frank Heslin a native of Scramogue, Co Roscommon

INFORMATION ON MOYNE RELATIVES

Hi,

I would very much like to talk with others on-line regarding the priests who were connected with The Latin School in Moyne.  I’m definitely related with two of the priests: Rev. James Gray (pages 49-50) and Rev. James Dobson (page 363) and I’m quite sure but not yet positive that Rev. William Gray and Rev. Denis Gray (page 153) are my great grandfather’s brothers.  In fact, I just returned from Ireland and visited Abbeylara and found the grave of Rev. William Gray.  Page numbers refer to the book, The Latin School.

I’m hoping to get information on Rev. James Duffy (page 146).

Please reply to me with any available information.
